Call for Artists - Three Creeks Confluence Quick Draw

The Seven Canyons Trust seeks up to three artists for a Quick Draw en Plein Air event at Beer at the Confluence on Saturday, June 15th. The Quick Draw seeks to activate the event with fun, family-friendly programming, while highlighting and supporting local artists. Honorariums of $100 are available with an option for up to 50% of the sale of the artwork(s).

Background & Description

The Three Creeks Confluence is the convergence of Red Butte, Emigration, and Parleys Creeks and the Jordan River. This innovative stream daylighting project uncovered 200 feet of the three creeks where they enter the Jordan, turning a parking lot into a thriving ecosystem and community connection. Highlighted as the centerpiece of the Seven Canyons Trust’s 100 Years of Daylighting, we envisioned this site as the first intervention in the century-long vision. In 2014, we presented this ambitious idea to Salt Lake City. In partnership with the Public Lands department, we raised over $3M for construction and opened the park in 2021.

On Saturday, June 15th, the Seven Canyons Trust is hosting Beer at the Confluence, sponsored by Fisher Brewing, Salt Lake City, West View Media, Clyde Snow & Sessions, and Turner Bitton for SLC School Board. This event celebrates success stories of stream restoration in the Salt Lake Valley and introduces the community to the special Three Creeks Confluence through craft beer, food, music, fun, and community celebration. All proceeds benefit the maintenance, activation, and programming of the Three Creeks Confluence.

The Quick Draw event seeks three artists to paint en plein air during Beer at the Confluence. Artists will start at 12 PM and must be on-site for at least four hours. Artists will have until 6 PM to complete one or more works of art. At which time, work(s) must be framed and wired for hanging in exhibit condition and ready to sell. Artists must prepare work to be taken by the highest bidder, including protecting the painting if still wet. The silent auction will conclude at 7 PM.

Artists will provide their own easel, paint or other art medium, canvas, frame, and any other materials/supplies needed to accomplish the work. Artists will complete works within the boundaries of the Three Creeks Confluence site—on either side of the creeks and east of the Jordan River. Artists may choose their desired location within those boundaries but should be considerate of other event programming. The Seven Canyons Trust will supply artists with an event map and schedule of programming.

The Quick Draw event seeks to activate the Beer at the Confluence event with fun, family-friendly programming. Guests will have the opportunity to watch as artists complete artworks of the beautiful Three Creeks Confluence. Chosen artists will have the opportunity to show off skills and support the Seven Canyons Trust, as well as the maintenance, activation, and programming of the site. Artists will also receive exposure on the event webpage, in event-related collateral, social media posts, during the event, and on the silent auction. We anticipate approximately 1,500 guests during the event.

Selection of the artists will be based on having met as many of the following criteria as possible:

  • Robust experience in accomplishing quick draw/plein air works during events of similar scope;

  • Interest in the quick draw event, Three Creeks Confluence, and/or Jordan River;  

  • Connection to the Glendale neighborhood and/or west-side of Salt Lake City; and

  • Ability to perform work under a strict deadline.

The Seven Canyons Trust is a nonprofit organization working to uncover and restore the buried and impaired creeks in the Salt Lake Valley.

Eligibility

This request for proposals is open to all artists residing in Utah regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, language, age, gender, sexual orientation, political opinion and affiliation, and mental and physical ability. To be considered, artists must demonstrate their ability to accomplish the work required by this call and must be available to join the event in person on June 15th from 12 to 4 PM. Artists who reside in or have a connection to the Glendale neighborhood of Salt Lake City will be prioritized.

 

Budget Detail

There will be honorariums available at $100 each for up to three artists. The honorarium is intended to supplement artists’ time, supplies, canvas, and frame/wiring. Additionally, artists may elect to receive up to 50% of the purchase price of the work(s) in the silent auction to supplement the honorarium. Artists may choose to receive between 0 and 50%, depending on the individual’s needs for compensation. All proceeds benefit the maintenance, activation, and programming of the Three Creeks Confluence.

Submission, Selection Process, & Artist Agreement

Submissions must be made through the form on or before 11:59 PM MST on Friday, May 24, 2024. Applications that meet this deadline and all other requirements will be reviewed. There is no application fee. Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Please do not include additional materials not requested. This may result in disqualification.

The Seven Canyons Trust will select three artists and one alternate. The selected artists will enter into an agreement with the Seven Canyons Trust. The alternate will only enter into an agreement if the Trust and selected artists are unable, for any reason and within the Trust’s sole discretion, to enter into an agreement.

The agreement lays out the terms and conditions of the event, including services, compensation, quality assurance, and termination. Applicants are encouraged to review the agreement before submission to make sure the terms and conditions are acceptable. The agreement can be reviewed here (*Link coming soon).

Additional Policies

The Seven Canyons Trust reserves the right to proceed with additional selection processes, reject any or all submissions, and revise the evaluation process. Any revisions will be announced in writing to all respondents and on applicable materials. The Trust will determine, at its sole discretion and based on the submitted information, the most qualified applications as evaluated by the criteria herein. The determination shall be final and conclusive.

The issuance of the request for proposals and the receipt and evaluation of submittals does not obligate the Seven Canyons Trust to select artists or enter into agreements. Applicants shall not contact the employees of the Seven Canyons Trust to manipulate or otherwise influence the process in any way. This process may be canceled at any time prior to the execution of an agreement without liability. The Seven Canyons Trust reserves the right to then pursue negotiations with an alternative artist(s). Costs incurred in responding to this request will not be compensated.

The Seven Canyons Trust will not accept any responsibility for injury or damage related to work under this call to oneself, equipment, or artworks before, during, or after the event.
